Meltdown Festival starts this weekend, including Meltdown Mardi Gras

PISSARRO IN DULPHICH: Also this weekend, Pissarro will be closing in Dulwich, a 400th anniversary Dulwich College exhibition. On this occasion, Camille Pissarro's view of the school's main building, painted in 1871, returns to Dulwich for the first time since its founding on loan from Toulouse. CUBITT SESSIONS: Last chance to see this year's Cubitt Sessions, a program of free open air music gigs at the newly opened Coal Drops Yard. On this weekend, artists from the English National Opera will be shown on Saturday and a series of performances for families on Sunday. FLIGHT FESTIVAL: The RAF Museum opens its doors to a free, family-friendly Festival of Flight. Take part in paper airplane challenges, watch hot air ballooning demonstrations and science shows, dress up as an RAF pilot and get involved in arts and crafts activities. RIDE LONDON: It's the Prudential RideLondon weekend of biking and racing across London and beyond. The family-friendly RideLondon-Surrey 19 route links the last 30 kilometers of the London-Surrey 100 route between Sandown Park and Green Park, and the FreeCycle is a traffic-free 11-kilometer route through the streets of central London. If you're not a big cyclist yourself, go to the streets to cheer others on. In both cases you have to be aware of road closures all weekend. 3-4 August


SAMPLE SALE: Buy a few bargains on Crafty Fox Market samples and second-hand sales. The usual eclectic selection of retailers sells single and final items at discounted prices, including jewelery, housewares, prints, paintings, ceramics and more. MELTDOWN FESTIVAL: The Southbank Center's Epic Meltdown Festival, curated by Nile Rodgers, begins this weekend. The one-week event consists of concerts and music events, and while some of the main events are sold out, many tickets are left over - and some are free. Highlights this weekend include Disco Wonderland on Saturday and Meltdown Mardi Gras on Sunday. Southbank Center, different prices, book in advance, 3-11 August


Bargain at the Crafty Fox Sample Sale

CAMDEN FRINGE: It's the first weekend of the Camden Fringe Festival, a one-month program of performing arts shows. Search the program for comedy, spoken word, circus, cabaret and magic shows, usually at reasonable prices. Different locations and prices, book in advance, until the 25th of August


LADYBIRD BOOKS: The garden museum opens a nostalgic exhibition on the ladybug books. A special focus is on books from the series in which children get to know nature. The Slime Festival comes to London

HERITAGE BUS TOUR: Board Daisy, a classic Routemaster, offers a one-day tour overlooking a historic building in the area. SLIME FESTIVAL: A whole day slime comes to East London. The Slime Festival is a family friendly day with workshops, live demonstrations and face painting. Take a tour with a classic Routemaster

SECRET GARDENS: Take a guided walk through some of London's most secretive gardens, from a bombed-out cemetery near the Tower of London to a communal garden with a mini-library hidden in it. MODERN ART PIONEERS: The footsteps of London tour guide Marilyn Greene lead a tour of the pioneering modern artists of Hampstead. The 51st State Festival takes place in Cockfosters

51st STATE: Expect a lot of giggling ravers driving on the Piccadilly line to Cockfosters for 51st State. This year, the festival is celebrated in the green belt and celebrates its fifth birthday. SÜDWARK-Justification: Southwark used to be the home of many long-gone tombs, including plague pits and rural cemeteries. VISION FESTIVAL: This London Fields music festival brings artists from different genres and countries to the stage.
